Pizza in Venice

by Charlotte
(Leeds)

To many people who have visited Venice in the past, the famous expression that you should never order a pizza in the city comes as something of a surprise, for in Venice, if you know exactly where to look, you can come across some of the best examples of pizza in the whole of Italy.

The best place to find pizza in Venice is an issue that is up for debate and always provokes different answers from different people, but one of the most popular answers is Campo Santa Margerita in Dorsoduro.

Visitors from across the world flock in large numbers to this institution and never leave disappointed. Perhaps the best choice of pizza here is the basic Margherita, which offers just a basic base with cheese, tomato, and basil, but which finds its beauty in its simplicity.

The locals flock here to sit on the authentic benches, which is always a good sign, so make sure you pay this place a visit if you're craving a pizza in the city.

Elsewhere, La Birerria in Campo San Polo does decent pizzas alongside a range of other delicacies and has more of an up-market restaurant feel to it. It has a lovely seating area outside and is only a five minute walk from Rialto so is in an ideal location.

One place to avoid is the Mercere, which seems to offer a number of awful restaurants offering the sort of pizza anyone can store in their American fridge freezers and make using gas cookers at home!

As with all city locations, if you spend some time doing research, you're bound to come across a meal that could go down as being the highlight of your trip!
