The Metropole Hotel in Venice

The Metropole Hotel in Venice has to have one of the best positions of any hotel in the city located as it is just off St Marks Square.

I really do like the hotel and I have always found it to be a well run place, the restaurant too is superb and is one of the best in Venice, if I remember correctly it is one of only two Michelin starred restaurants in Venice.

Despite the great quality the food is a little expensive and to be honest I'm not always a great fan of "fancy food" anyway. I prefer something more like my Mamma's home cooked Italian, with hearty portions of traditional dishes. If that's you too then you can always get the hotel to recommend somewhere cheaper for lunch or dinner, or better still why not try one of the restaurants I have on the site?

If you're here in the spring or summer you'll not want to go anywhere else for breakfast though - breakfast served in the Citrus Garden Courtyard is about the best way I know to start the day on a warm summer’s morning and the food really is abundant and delicious.

I don't know what it is but my first cappuccino of the day is always so much lovelier with the scent of jasmine and orange blossom in the air.  By the way, talking of citrus gardens, they have a great one at the wonderful Santa Maria in Rome too.

Do note though that the courtyard is only open from May through to mid to late September. The rest of the year the breakfasts are served indoors which is nowhere near as nice, the food of course is the same but the atmosphere is not a patch on the courtyard.

When you book make sure you get a room with a balcony and a view over the lagoon, it costs a bit more but I can assure you it is worth the money.

If your room does have a balcony then this has to be one of the most romantic hotels in Venice. You can count on an unforgettable honeymoon or romantic getaway enjoyed in the lap of luxury.

Negative Points

Well the prices are a bit high and some of the staff can seem a little bit snobbish at first but once you get to know them you will find they really aren’t and if you have any problems during your stay speak to Aurelio Bon, the Assistant Manager, he really bends over backwards to help.

The problem is more a cultural thing anyway, many Italians prefer staff to not be “familiar” whereas to people from the USA and other English speaking countries their detached demeanor can appear unfriendly and even at times snobbish.
