Garda Town

Garda Town is situated on a magnificent bay surrounded by hills. The location of Garda, halfway up the eastern shore makes it ideal to explore the mountainous northern parts of the lake as well as the southern lake towns and the wine regions to the east. A short drive away is Gardaland, the perfect place for bored children and Italy’s biggest theme park.

Where to Stay

Perfect is the Hotel Benaco which is well run with friendly efficient staff and a helpful owner who ensures everything is spotlessly clean. The hotel is right in the heart of town and rates are excellent.

What to See

Enjoy the promenade which is one of the best of any Garda town. The restaurants and bars along here are a hive of activity day and night during the summer. This is the place to people watch while enjoying an extraordinarily beautiful setting. The bay and the lush hills, remind me of a miniature Rio in some ways, especially after a few drinks.

There is a fairly decent beach (visit our Garda beach guide for more on the beaches) and the old town is a pleasant place to wander around browsing the shops. You might find the occasional bargain but most of the shops tend to be on the expensive side. If you appreciate the historical then visit the Santa Maria Maggiore church in the old town.

Take a trip along to Punta San Vigilio which is just to the easto of town. Set as it is at the end of a promontory at the base of Monte Baldo and with stunning views across the bay this is one of the loveliest spots on the lake and there is a good shingle beach here too.

If you fancy a game of golf the championship golf course above the town offers a challenging course and some breathtaking views over Lake Garda.

When to Visit

Anytime from May to September is great although July and August can get a bit crowded. For more on Lake Garda’s weather and the best months to visit click here.
